Enlightenment shines its light into our lives in all manner of disguises. In my case, it appeared in the form of a tiny 5 foot tall, 90 lb. Filipina.
The most enlightening moment in my life occurred in the early days of my marriage to my late wife, Myrna, who was born a street urchin in Manila (and later became a manager at a corporate law firm in NYC, drawing a six figure salary).
True to my Western indoctrination in blaming men and pitying women, I was droning on with another lecture intended to instruct Myrna in feminism, a philosophy that she absolutely despised. I was carrying on about the fate of Filipino women forced into prostitution by the Japanese during WWII, when she finally had had enough and she just exploded in anger:
"What in the fuck do you think happened to the men?"
She proceeded to tell me.
As I said, the single most enlightening moment of my life. But not the last with Myrna.
