Today, I played guitar and sang for the 8 a.m. mass at St. John’s in Woodstock. Because today’s mass was for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, I looked through the hymnal and found the tune below, which bears a striking resemblance to Cat Stevens' classic, Morning Has Broken.
I recorded my tune on my Zoom H1. I’m still learning the Zoom R24 multi-track recorder that I bought myself for Christmas. I’ll be putting some stuff up that I recorded on the R24 soon.
Playing for my parish is remarkably gratifying. Father George praises me so generously. The congregation gave me a round of applause after services, and several people stopped by to introduce themselves and invite me to the pancake breakfast in the cafeteria. At breakfast, I met Jimmy Weider’s parents! It’s Woodstock, after all!
Singing hymns in church is an entirely different vocal method. I have to be more restrained and on pitch. And, the whole point is to lead the congregation in song. I’ll improve with practice.
