The Illini apparently spent last week reading their press clippings and basking in the glory of their road victory at Wisconsin. How else to explain their loss to lowly Penn State at home?
I watched the highlights on ESPN on Saturday night with the Karaoke Queen.
“Why wasn’t the game on TV?” she asked.
“It was expected to be a blowout. Penn State is a bad team. Illinois was expected to be ahead by 20 at the half,” I answered.
And to think that I predicted a Final Four for Illinois just last week.
What a stinker of a loss! Illini Wonk was rendered almost speechless. Tupper says “hats off to a gutty Penn State team that never gave up and played with great determination.”
My ass! This game is just a total breakdown. I hadn’t expected that a Bruce Weber coached team could suffer such a collapse. Perhaps this can be attributed to the youth of the team.
Kiss the Big Ten championship goodbye. Now, it’s time to regroup for a run at the Big Ten Tournament championship and the NCAA.
