I drove from Houston to Austin to visit Dave Dix, a Facebook friend. And, I just wanted to see Austin, the state capital and the home of the University of Texas. Long drive through the scrubland of rural Texas. I took the southern route en route to Austin and the northern route back to Houston. Saw one hell of a lot of the state.
Austin is a party town and a biker town. Hundreds of bikers out for a ride on Sunday, taking advantage of the 70 degree heat. Several tattoo parlors along 6th St., the main drag through campus. Bar after bar for about 8 blocks.
I had hoped to see some jackrabbits along the rural highways, but no luck. I did, however, see plenty of jackrabbit corpses crushed alongside the road. This bar was dedicated to the big rodent.
This giant jackrabbit (or mythical "jackalope") decorated the entrance way to the Jackalope Bar & Grill. Note "The Rules" which state "No Male Nudity!" Unfortunately, I didn't have time to hang around for the nightly festivities to discover how much female nudity might be allowed.
Many interesting storefronts with cowboy and cowgirl motifs along 6th St. I can't drink much... thanks to the infirmities of old age. And, the college kids would undoubtedly wonder what an old fart was doing creeping up their party.
Quite a few live music venues along 6th St., too. No way anybody is making any money in those dives, but it must be a fun place for young musicians to develop.
