I’m learning all sort of things about babies that I forgot. I’ve forgotten all of my nursery rhymes. The first one that came to mind, when I was scratching my head and trying to remember, is This Little Piggy! You name it, and it’s out there on the internet. Right?
The way This Little Piggy works is… you yank on one toe per line of the song. This nursery rhyme seems to have multiple purposes. The sing-song and drama get the kid’s attention, which might save said kid from a crying jag. Babies cry a lot.
Tugging on the baby's toes seems to me to be intended to sensitize baby to his or her extremities. Babies get their coordination together slowly.
Rockabye Baby is the all time great nursery rhyme.
My granddaughter does, indeed, want to be rocked. All the time. In fact, it appears she wants to go somewhere and see new things. Just like me.
For now, going somewhere means doing laps around the kitchen, and the new things are just her home and being alive. Rocking helps us all to stay calm. Who wants to be stuck in one place!
Humans are born so helpless and dependent. Constant assurance is needed during infancy just to give the kid the sense that he or she has been born into a world of peace and sanity.
