The money is all in healthcare. Every other sector of the U.S. economy is in trouble or dying. The only growth is in healthcare.
Our population is becoming geriatric. As white American women become ever more reluctant to have babies, the population is also becoming more black and Hispanic.
So, the Democratic Party’s obsession with healthcare isn’t entirely about compassion and social justice. In fact, I think those are minor concerns. What’s really important here is getting your hands on the money. The winner in the battle to control the healthcare industry gains control of immense political power.
I don’t worry too much about large scale political issues. But, I am trying to figure out how to maintain a decent income into old age. So, I’m also headed toward the money. I’ve just landed my first job in healthcare, a part time job as a CNA at a Catholic nursing home. I’m also attracted to the work because I can remain useful and help other people for as long as I am physically able.
The work is tough and dirty. The pay is terrible. I’m not going to do it for much longer than a year or two, when I’ll hopefully graduate to an LPN job that pays twice as much... and doesn’t require so much heavy lifting. (I start next Monday. I’ll be working out diligently to get ready for the physical labor.)
Inadvertenly, I’ve become a member of a union, SEIU, the Service Workers International Union. SEIU isn’t shy about its political opinions. In the welcome pack that I received at orientation, they solicited contributions to support lobbying for President Obama’s healthcare legislation. I declined, not out of hostility, but because I don’t yet have a clue what they plan to do with the money.
I’m definitely taking the “if you can’t beat them, join them” route. After three months, I’ll get my health insurance through the union. That’ll be a big improvement. I’m not running the world. I’m just trying to get along. Right now, there’s no place to go except to the healthcare industry. My multimedia career is petering out because age discrimination is making it impossible for me to find work.
