The IAC building was still under construction when I worked in the Chelsea. Take a look at this picture of the skeleton of the building while it was under construction. IAC is, apparently, a holding company for a wide variety of interactive brands. Check out the website. A very well done Flash animation takes you through the design of the exterior and interior of the building.
Of particular interest is the huge video wall. I took a picture through the glass. The pictures in the building website are much better. Apparently, the wall is capable of displaying one huge image or hundreds of single screen images.
“Whimsical” is the word the designers of the building use to describe their achievement. Frankly, I think that the building is an ugly mess. There is no denying that it is innovative. When I try to imagine what the building is supposed to evoke, about the best I can do is to say that the individual projections bring to mind a ship’s sail.
I miss the hubbub of Manhattan. Without a second salary to pay the bills, I don’t know if I can afford to live and work there again. I’m looking.
